SPI/CSPI Position at the Kentucky Poison Control Center

The Kentucky Poison Control Center (KPCC) is looking for a Specialist in Poison Information willing to bring their talent and dedication to a dynamic, moderate sized poison center that covers the state of Kentucky. Located in downtown Louisville, we are a part of Norton Healthcare, the third largest employer in Kentucky.

Whether you are a certified, seasoned SPI, new to the game or looking to get your foot in the door – we want you. The specialist in poison information is an experienced nurse that provides verbal recommendations and phone triage for poisoned patients. The specialist will manage calls from the general public as well as healthcare providers from all over the state of Kentucky. During each call, the specialist will accurately and appropriately assess the poisoning scenario and provide recommendations for patient management both at home and in the healthcare facility. As the poison expert, the specialist will relay information on evaluation, treatment, and monitoring of patients to the requesting healthcare provider. No poison center experience is necessary. Intensive on the job training in the field of toxicology will be provided to prepare the specialist for national certification. A successful specialist in poison information is capable of communicating effectively with the lay public as well as physicians, pharmacists, nurses, and mid-level providers. The successful candidate must be comfortable using a computer to document patient management as well as search for up-to-date information on patient management when necessary. The candidate must also be comfortable discussing patient management over the phone. We are looking for a curious, independent learner who has a desire for professional development and demonstrates clinical competency. The successful specialist is willing to jump in and assist the team. Once training is complete, the specialist will be able to efficiently manage case load assignments, document appropriately in our electronic database, and perform other related duties including peer review of cases and participation in weekly case conferences and bi-monthly staff meetings.

We are currently looking for a day shift position – ideally 9a to 7:30p, four shifts per week that includes every other weekend. This person may rotate to second or third shift on occasion to help cover absences. The successful candidate is willing to be flexible with scheduling. If you are not certified, individual training for the first 8 weeks is on second shift.
